Interview conducted by Malcolm T Pappan as part of the LDS Native American Oral History Project by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University on August 12, 1990. Harlan talks about his experiences growing up in Macy, Nebraska, He tells about his early family life and his conversion to the Mormon Church. He talks about his activity in the Mormon Church, his married life, and his decision to go to Brigham Young University. He talks about his and his children's experiences on the Mormon Church Indian Placement Program. He discusses his callings in the Mormon Church, especially his experiences as a branch president in Macy, Nebraska. He talks about the excommunication of George P. Lee, the advantages and disadvantages of having Native American branches in the Mormon Church, and his relationships with Native American Mormons and other Mormons.
